New York radio`s most well-known fundraising event, Hungerthon, airs between Monday, November 22nd and Sunday, November 28th with a round-robin schedule involving CBS/Infinity`s six NYC stations: WFAN (660 AM), WCBS-AM (880), WINS (1010 AM), K-Rock (WXRK, 92.3 FM), WCBS-FM (101.1), and WNEW (102.7). Some of the programs which will host the radiothon are WFAN`s Mike & the Mad Dog show (Tuesday, November 23rd, 1-6 PM), WCBS-FM`s Dan Daniel, Bill Brown, and Bob Shannon shows (Tuesday, November 23rd, 9 AM - 4 PM), and WFAN`s Richard Neer show (Saturday, November 27th, 5-10 AM).
Two special programs are scheduled for the final day of Hungerthon `99, Sunday, November 28th. The first is the Sunday Morning Chapin Show, broadcast live from the Hammerstein Ballroom on WNEW-FM from 8 AM - 11:30 AM. Tom Chapin, Steve Chapin, Jen Chapin, Bill Ayres, and other special guests will join guest host Pete Fornatale. Tickets are available from World Hunger Year; call 212-629-8850 ext. 127. The second special broadcast is the Vin Scelsa`s Idiot`s Delight Rent Party, also on WNEW-FM, beginning at 5:30 PM, during which contributors can exercise the rare opportunity to "buy" their song requests and dedications from Vin.
Hungerthon, created by World Hunger Year co-founders Harry Chapin and Bill Ayres, was first carried on WNEW-FM in 1975, and has been an annual event on WNEW or K-Rock since 1985. Listeners can contribute to World Hunger Year`s programs by calling 1-800-5HUNGRY. In addition, a tremendous assortment of guitars and one-of-a-kind items contributed by musicians and other benefactors will be auctioned off via eBay to benefit World Hunger Year during Hungerthon.
Complete information on Hungerthon, including a detailed schedule, links to the eBay auction, and information on a number of upcoming special benefit concerts, is available on the Hungerthon website.
Afterword: Hungerthon `99 raised over $730,000 for the programs of World Hunger Year. During Hungerthon`s final day, WNEW-FM`s (102.7) musical heritage shone through with the Chapin Family show (hosted by Pete Fornatale and Bill Ayres) in the morning and the Vin Scelsa`s Idiot`s Delight Rent Party on the air all evening. Vin`s Rent Party alone raised nearly one third ($232,000) of the total amount contributed for the entire week of Hungerthon!
