| History | WQXR was one of the world's first FM stations and it is the oldest FM station in the New York area. It first went on the air on 11/8/39 under the call letters W2XQR on a frequency of 43.2MHz. In 1941, its freqency changed to 48.7 and then to 45.9. In July, 1943, the station adopted the call letters W59NY, which changed to WQXQ on 11/1/43. In 1946, after the FM band was moved, the station began to broadcast on 97.7. It moved to its present frequency, 96.3, in 1947, and in 1948 it became WQXR. The station has been owned by the New York Times since February, 1944. |
