The first station on this frequency, WMCA-FM, went on the air on December 25, 1948, broadcasting until February 26, 1951, when it was sold to WHOM. WHOM-FM featured a variety of formats, including ethnic, background music, clasical, Spanish, and easy listening. WKTU (light pop format) ran from June 5, 1975 to July 29, 1978; WKTU (Disco format) 7/78-7/85; WXRK (Classic Rock format) 7/13/85 - 1/5/96; Alternative Rock format adopted 1/5/96, gradually moving to an Active Rock format.

On Sunday, January 1, 2006, WXRK changed its call letters to WFNY, and on Tuesday, January 3, 2006, WFNY replaced its weekday music programming with talk/personality shows. On May 24, 2007, the talk/personality format was discontinued and the previous rock format was reinstated. The station reverted to its WXRK call letters on May 31, 2007. WXRK adopted a CHR format on March 11, 2009 as "92.3 NOW", and the call letters were changed to WNOW on November 8, 2012. The station re-branded as "92.3 AMP Radio" in May, 2014, adopting the call letters WBMP on June 23, 2014.

Following the FCC approval of the merger of CBS Radio into Entercom Communications, WBMP, as "ALT 92.3", adopted an Alternative Rock format on November 17, 2017.
