History | The first station on this frequency was WNNJ, later called WPAT-FM, Paterson, New Jersey, from 1948-50. Next to appear was Easy Listening WTFM on September 1, 1958, which was purchased by appliance retailer Friendly Frost in 1960. The station was sold to Doubleday and became Rock WAPP on 5/3/82. WAPP was sold to Emmis in 1986 and its call letters were changed to WQHT, Urban/Dance format, on 8/15/86. On 9/22/88, WQHT moved to 97.1, exchanging frequencies with Country WYNY, owned by Westwood One, which moved to this frequency. The station was sold to Evergreen Media and became WKTU on 2/12/96. In the second half of 2006, WKTU dropped its current rhythmic hits and shifted to a Rhythmic AC format. |
Comments | On September 11, 2001, WKTU switched to a backup transmitter following the destruction of the World Trade Center. |
