History Operated until 1997 as the City of New York's municipal radio station, the station went on the air in March, 1943 as W39NY on a frequency of 43.9MHz, becoming WNYC-FM on November 1, 1943. In 1946, it moved to the new FM band at 94.5, moved to 95.3, and in 1947, moved again to 93.9. It was sold to the WNYC Foundation in 1997.
