History | First operated by AT&T`s Western Electric subsidiary, WEAF began broadcasting on August 16, 1922 from lower Manhattan. The station was sold to the newly-formed NBC in 1926, becoming the flagship station of the NBC Red Network and moving to 660 kc in 1928. On November 12, 1946, the call letters were changed to WNBC. The name of the station was changed to WRCA in October, 1954 and changed back to WNBC on June 1, 1960. An all-talk format was introduced in 1964, with various music formats airing beginning in 1970; Don Imus and Howard Stern were first heard in NYC on WNBC. The station was sold by General Electric to Emmis in 1988; all-sports WFAN moved to this frequency from 1050 AM on 10/7/88. WFAN was sold to Infinity Broadcasting in 1992 and came under the ownership of CBS Radio in 1997.
