On April 1, 1941, it become the first commercial FM station in New York, taking the call letters W71NY and moving to 47.1MHz. On November 1, 1943, the call letters were changed to WOR-FM, changing again to WBAM (named after the station's owner, Bamberger's Department Stores) on January 1, 1944. WBAM moved to 96.5 on the new FM dial in 1945 and to 98.7 in October, 1947. It became WOR-FM in 1948, broadcasting with more than a year`s interruption in the mid-50`s. While owned by RKO, WOR-FM adopted a progressive rock format on July 30, 1966 and changed to a Top 40/oldies format in 1967. The station`s call letters changed on October 23, 1972 to WXLO, which featured an Adult Top 40 format though the 70`s. A disco/soul format was introduced in 1980 and the call letters were changed to WRKS (Kiss FM) on August 1, 1981. Kiss FM was purchased by Emmis in 1994, and featured a range of urban formats. |
Comments | On April 30, 2012, Disney/ABC`s ESPN Radio began operating a sports format on this frequency under an LMA with Emmis. At the same time, the intellectual property rights of the KISS FM urban format were purchased by WBLS. The call sign was changed from WRKS to WEPN-FM on May 14, 2012. |
